Thanks to the incomparable (in my eyes anyway!) Kevin McCloud many of us dream of building our own “Grand Design” or taking on a renovation project.
The truth is most of us are ill-equipped, which is why visits to events like the Homebuilding & Renovating Show are a must. They are a real eye opener as I found out when I visited the HB&R Show at Harrogate’s International Centre today. It’s there until Sunday, November 8.
There are exhibitors from far and wide with a big and very impressive contingent from Yorkshire. There are architects, kitchen makers, bathroom suppliers, builders, glass makers, renewable energy specialists and some very interesting homes that are manufactured largely off-site then craned in and erected within a week. These started at about £150,000 for a three bedroom house.
The biggest queues were for the Plotfinder stand though as one homebuilder told me “It’s sometimes best to go knocking on doors or to look for a property that can be knocked down and replaced”. Land with planning permission in a prime location costs a fortune.
I left with a bag bulging with leaflets and brochures and a renewed determination to self-build or at least radically improve what I’ve got.
Here are some of my snaps.
