Carluccio’s Italian restaurant has opened in Harrogate and to celebrate we have a a great giveaway of a gorgeous Carluccio’s picnic hamper.
At the splendid official opening launch party last week, Antonio Carluccio was genial host of honour. It was wonderful to see the man himself in the flesh. Sporting a striking double-pronged wooden staff (we want one), he beamed as he presided over a very lively night. The place was buzzing, and there was singing and impromptu dancing too, accompanied by irrepressible accordion player Roman.
Fuelled by delicious canapes and an endless supply of Prosecco and Prosciutto, the guests made it plain that they were very happy to welcome Carluccio’s and its founder to their town. Antonio and the Carluccio’s team were clearly delighted to be there too. Chief executive Simon Kossoff announced that, even though he was inclined to say that every new Carluccio’s was his favourite, Harrogate really was, while Antonio Carluccio, told us how pleased and grateful he was for all the support and backing the people of Harrogate had given to his latest offspring.
It’s taken a year to get the restaurant open at Station Square, due to a planning wrangle with Harrogate Borough Council, which refused two change of use applications. However, this was far from the end of the story, because there followed a huge public outcry. Harrogate residents really wanted a Carluccio’s (sick of having to go to Leeds to find a decent selection of reasonably priced restaurants with a busy, unpretentious but stylish atmosphere – and there is definitely room in the town for quality chain restaurants, as well as the new and established independents). Anyway, Carluccio’s won after a government inspector ruled the development would improve the vitality and viability of the immediate surrounding area.
And now it’s here – not just an excellent restaurant (which is open from 8am for breakfast AND has Wifi) but also a deli selling gorgeous Italian olive oils, pastas, picnics and lots of lovely Italian delicacies. For breakfast, try Uova e Pancetta (free range fried eggs with grilled pancetta on toasted Italian bread, £6.85) or maybe Eggs Florentine (poached eggs and spinach topped with hollandaise on toasted Italian bread, £7.75). Main dishes include Merluzzo Con Piselli (pan roasted cod fillet, with minty braised baby gem lettuce, peas and smoky pancetta, £14.95) and Tagliata di Manzo (thinly sliced chargrilled rump steak, served with rocket leaves and shaved Parmesan, rosemary potatoes and tarragon mayonnaise, £32 to share). And of course there are all the fabulous Carluccio’s signature pasta dishes, very reasonably priced at £8-11.
In the deli offering, the picnic hampers are a real feature, perfect for al fresco dining in authentically Italian style. Each picnic hamper costs £45 and serves two with generous portions of delicious regional Italian dishes, made fresh on the day and presented in a cool reusable cool-bag (there’s a children’s picnic too, which costs £10). Hampers must be pre-ordered at least 24 hours in advance from your nearest Carluccio’s, or, if you choose it as a last minute option, the ‘chef’s choice’ will be available on the day.
