There’s a nip in the air and autumn is on its way – which means that the gorgeous new fashion collections are wafting into the stores and online. And, in all honesty, autumn IS the best season for fashion.
The best news is that it’s all getting a lot more relaxed and chilled than in previous seasons, with fluid lines and comforting layers, but quite a strong, sculptural and artistic feel in terms of shape, colour and pattern.
Knitwear is key – and fortunately it’s something we do rather magnificently in Yorkshire – check out Northallerton based Needle at www.needleboutique.co.uk – so look for tonal grey and taupe palettes especially in cable knit. This lovely cable knit with a twist is the perfect colour for the season and the cowl neck and V-yoke details are just perfect.
On to skirts and the best length is the midi. This berry faux leather one from Next is a great autumn wardrobe piece, an essential, to dress with a sweater like the Needle one, or to smarten up with white fitted shirt for the office.
Next, tailoring – if you have not already got a tux jacket, this is the season to invest in the best. Look for silky and slightly slouchy in autumn’s new fluid lines and add a sexy white shirt. This look from Mint Velvet is impressive yet wearable. And if you have not been to the new Mint Velvet store on Low Petergate in York, you must – it’s absolutely gorgeous and there’s a little courtyard garden at the back (we think they’ve started something here – why don’t all shops have gardens?).
Shearling jackets and gilets are a must for outerwear and they will work with everything – especially over long, full and luxurious evening skirts for dress up/down heaven. We love this one from Hobbs and we’ve put in on our autumn fashion bucket list.
Finally, footwear – and lace-up shoes and boots are the way to go, combining sturdiness with the style factor. Get them now – these Bertie ones are the business.
So that’s autumn coming. We think it might be time to hit the shops.
