The Shape of Sound, Northern Ballet

Northern Ballet autumn season. Northern Ballet revives family classics and showcases new dance. A trio of new short ballets features in its Mixed Programme at Doncaster Cast (Sept 21- 22): Featuring The Shape of Sound by Kenneth Tindall, Mamela… by Mlindi Kulashe and The Kingdom of Back by Morgann Runacre-Temple. In October, returning to the stage for the first time since 2007, Northern Ballet’s The Three Musketeers will be performed at the Lyceum Theatre, Sheffield from October 24-27, choreographed by artistic director David Nixon. Later in October, Northern Ballet will hold the world premiere of its new children’s ballet Puss in Boots at the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre, Leeds from Oct 27-Nov 5. The season ends with festive favourite The Nutcracker at Hull New Theatre (Nov 14-17) and Leeds Grand Theatre (Dec 4-16). northernballet.com/whatson

Harrogate Oktoberfest, Harrogate Convention Centre, Ripon Road. Fri Sept 21, 5pm-11pm, Sat Sept 22, 11.30am-4.30pm and 6pm-11pm. Raworths Harrogate Literature Festival, The Crown Hotel, Harrogate, Oct 18-21. Featuring a line-up of writers including historical fiction author Conn Iggulden, historian David Starkey, TV star Nick Hewer, BBC journalist John Simpson, former Home Secretary Alan Johnson, wine writer Oz Clarke and wife of the late Professor Stephen Hawking, Dr Jane Hawking, whose book inspired the Oscar-winning film, The Theory of Everything, talking about her new novel, Cry to Dream Again.

The Ted Hughes Festival, October 19-21, various locations in Mytholmroyd and Hebden Bridge.
