Nutcracker Extravaganza, Kirkstall Abbey, Leeds, December 14-16. Featuring a secret entrance, an enchanted world (where snow falls daily) and surprises including brass bands, dance performance, acrobatics, and festive treats – from street food to mulled wine, and themed cocktails. Leeds Christkindelmarkt, Millennium Square, Calverley Street, until Dec 22. One of the longest-established German Christmas markets in the UK. With 40 traditional wooden stalls, festive greenery, Christmas carousel ride and festive lights all creating a continental atmosphere in Leeds city centre. Christmas at Harewood: Dreams of the 1920s. A fantasy Christmas at Harewood House, near Leeds, 10am-6pm, until Jan 6, 2019. Creative director Simon Costin has created a Christmas dreamscape extending from the House into the grounds, with festive-themed music, events, demonstrations and experiences. Once Upon a Time, Chatsworth House, until Jan 6. Be transported into a world of make-believe as Chatsworth presents a selection scenes from classic tales woven throughout the house to create a storybook world. The creative team has produced a Christmas experience that draws on the talents of the staff from across the estate to make costumes, props and sets as well as painting, decorating, printing and staging with lighting, sounds and scents. Entrance to Once Upon a Time is included with Christmas admission. Castle Howard hosts The Twelve Days of Christmas, until Dec 31. See the grand interiors transformed by magnificent decorations on a journey through the grand state rooms, brining you open fires, candlelight and live music plus the 25 foot traditional Christmas tree adorned with more than 3,000 baubles in the Great Hall, a fun indoor children’s trail, Christmas Market, Farm Shop and Garden Centre. The BFG in Pictures, York Art Gallery, until Feb 24, 2019. An exhibition of original Quentin Blake illustrations, prepared for Roald Dahl’s classic story The BFG. Curated by Quentin Blake himself, the exhibition contains 40 original artworks, including rarely seen unpublished illustrations, exhibited alongside the final illustrations for the book, giving an insight into the collaboration between author and artist. https://www.
