Captain Cook Festival, Whitby, July 6-8. A celebration of the 250th anniversary of Captain Cook’s first expedition to the South Seas in 1768. A weekend of discovery and entertainment where you can step back in time aboard the tall ship Atyla to experience life at sea, retrace Captain Cook’s voyages on the replica HMS Endeavour and re-live the Battle of Trafalgar on the smallest ship in Nelson’s fleet, the replica warship topsail schooner, HMS Pickle. Off the water, local chefs will try an 18th century twist on modern day cuisine in the live cooking theatre and there will be live music, street theatre and sea shanties alongside a celebration firework display. www.discoveryorkshirecoast.com/whitby/cook250.aspx. Bradford Literature Festival, including Jeannette Winterson, David Starkey, Akala, Lowkey, Suzi Quatro, Harry Leslie Smith, Frank Bruno and Scilla Elworthy. Also young people’s programme with children’s authors and illustrators, and four free family fun days in City Park with outdoor live theatre, craft workshops, acting workshops and films on big screen. Special events include The Brontë Stones: In the Footsteps of the Brontës walk, a Brontë Heritage Tour with Christa Ackroyd, and a Jewish Manningham Tour of Bradford. The 160th Great Yorkshire Show, Harrogate, July 10-12. The iconic three-day county event will host more than 130,000 visitors and 8,500 animals. The Princess Royal is a special guest on Wednesday, July 11, and BBC Countryfile presenter Anita Rani will take to the catwalk in a one-off celebrity fashion special also featuring a host of local television personalities at 2:30pm on Tuesday, July 10. Singer Lizzie Jones is also set to make history when she becomes the first singer to perform in the Main Ring, with two performances on each day of the show. https://greatyorkshireshow.co.uk/

Luminarium, Architects of Air, West Park Stray, Harrogate, July 12-15. The Stray transforms into a magical world of sensory bliss – in sound and vision – as visitors enter an airlock and explore the installation and the ambience. Harrogate Music Festival 2018, various locations, throughout July. Month-long festival featuring an appearance by Mercury Award nominated singer, Laura Mvula, on Friday, July 27. Other highlights include the Hallé Orchestra with its musical director, Sir Mark Elder, celebrating the 125th anniversary of Tchaikovsky (July 29); a tribute to the centennial of Leonard Bernstein, as Britain’s favourite clarinettist, Emma Johnson, performs his classics including music from West Side Story (July 26); international strings prodigy Louisa Staples playing Prokofiev, Debussy and Ravel (July 13); theatre troupe Oddsocks setting Shakespeare in space with a sci-fi musical adaptation of The Tempest performed in RHS Harlow Carr Gardens (July 10 and 11); and the return of festival favourite, The John Wilson Orchestra, celebrating Hollywood’s Golden Age. The magical Spiegeltent also returns in Crescent Gardens, with a Children’s Festival and week-long programme of live music featuring club classics, soul and jazz, with guest curator the MOBO-nominated jazz vocalist, Ayanna Witter-Johnson. Ryedale Festival, July 13-29. Top-class music performers to beautiful and historic venues amid the North Yorkshire countryside. The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Royal Northern Sinfonia give major concerts at Hovingham Hall, the Choir of King’s College Cambridge are at Ampleforth Abbey and the Orchestra of Opera North bring a symphonic programme to Scarborough Spa. There’s also a new production of Mozart’s opera Così fan tutte ,and the American pianist Richard Goode leads a line-up of soloists, including Tamsin Waley-Cohen, Gabriela Montero,Adam Walker, Kathryn Rudge, Elin Manahan Thomas, Benjamin Appl, Rachel Podger and Charles Owen, along with outstanding emerging artists such as cellists Kian Soltani and Sheku Kanneh-Mason.

Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival, Old Swan Hotel, Harrogate, July 19-22. Now in its 15th year of celebrating the very best in crime fiction, the festival has become an imortant part of the international literary calendar. Best-selling crime novelist Lee Child is this year’s programming chair for 2018, and the line-up includes John Grisham, Val McDermid and Sue Black, Richard Osman, Denise Mina, Don Winslow and Linwood Barclay. https://harrogateinternationalfestivals.com/crime-writing-festival/

The Great Yorkshire Fringe, fourth year of annual York festival featuring household names including Michael Palin, Reginald D Hunter, Omid Djalili, Gyles Brandreth, Tony Slattery, Rachel Parris, Lee Nelson and Paul Sinha. July 19-29. Diverse mix of theatre, comedy, music, street food and family entertainment. Also featuring Lost Voice Guy (Lee Ridley), fresh from his Britain’s Got Talent 2018 win, music from Ronnie Scott’s All Stars, including performances from Claire Martin.The York Fringe Dog Show will be returning with prizes up for grabs for the waggiest tail, prettiest female, most handsome male and best in show. www.greatyorkshirefringe.com
