Chatsworth Country Fair

Feva, Knaresborough’s annual festival of entertainment and visual arts, until Aug 19, featuring 84 events in various locations, climaxing on Saturday, Aug 18 with the free Picnic in the Park in the grounds of Knaresborough House, with live bands and DJ performances. This will be accompanied over the same weekend by the Lions’ Beer Festival, with more than 20 different real ales, along with ciders, wine, Pimms and food. http://www.feva.info/

Vintage, designer and theatrical costume auction from costumier Academy of London, Tennants Auctioneers, Leyburn, Aug 18. A spectacular collection from the 1960s to the 1980s, with designer labels such as Yves Saint Laurent and Zandra Rhodes, and reproduction theatrical outfits. Academy of London have supplied costume to movie blockbusters such as the Harry Potter franchise, Casino Royale, Les Miserables and to music stars including Beyonce and Lady Gaga. www.tennants.co.uk

Vintage Weekend at Lotherton Hall, Aberford, near Leeds, Aug 18-19, 11am-4pm (each day). A whole weekend of vintage, with up to 25 stalls of genuine vintage fashion, homewares, small furniture and collectables from the 1920s to the 1980s in the grounds of this Edwardian country house. StrEat Food and Family Fun Festival, Great Yorkshire Showground, Harrogate, August 25-27. Take a gastronomic journey around the world as the festival returns to Harrogate with more than 40 street food traders alongside entertainment from street performers, live music and children’s activities. New to the festival is an Artisan Marketplace where visitors can pick up gifts to take home from artisan producers, distillers, craft brewers, bakers, chocolatiers and many more. Tickets are £10 per adult, with tickets bought before Aug 20 at two for the price of one. Under 13s are free. https://www.streatpr.co.uk

Chatsworth Country Fair, Chatsworth House, Aug 31-Sept 2, 9am-6.30pm. One of England’s most spectacular annual outdoor events, with a programme of grand ring entertainment, a cookery theatre and fine food village. You can try your hand at heritage country sports, rural country crafts, and see vintage and military vehicles on display. There is also Countryman’s Walk, which celebrates traditional country skills with demonstrations from the country’s top craftsmen and women. www.chatsworth.org/countryfair

Magic and the Metropolis, exhibition of photography, drawings and paintings by John Cockshaw, Curzon Ripon cinema, until Aug 31. Inspired by sci-fi and fantasy in literature and cinema exploring themes of magic and the city. Vintage Fair at Square Chapel Arts Centre, Halifax, Sept 8, hosted by Yorkshire Vintage Fairs. Twenty stalls of fabulous vintage fashions, accessories and homewares from the 1920s to the 1980s, plus live vintage vocalist, swing dance workshops and classic film screening of Some Like it Hot at the RIBA award-winning venue, next door to The Piece Hall. www.yorkshirevintagefairs.com

Leeds Vintage Furniture & Home Fair, Sept 8-9, The Old Woollen, Sunny Bank Mills, Farsley, Leeds. Featuring 25 stalls of original vintage, devoted to the home, all set within an industrial space. S part of Heritage Weekend in Farsley, Sunny Bank Mills will be running guided tours and Open Studios, and (on Saturday morning) hosting an Aston Martin rally.

Ryedale Book Festival, Malton, Sept 21-22. Writers including Alan Johnson, Tracy Borman, Stephen Booth, Tim Pears, Jane Lovering, Paula Byrne, Chris Power, Laura Stephens and wine-tasting with Peter Stafford-Bow. Queens of Industry, exhibition telling the stories of the working class ‘queens’ elected to represent some of Britain’s greatest industries. Until Sep 29, Leeds Industrial Museum, Canal Road, Leeds. Raworths Harrogate Literature Festival, The Crown Hotel, Harrogate, Oct 18-21. Featuring a line-up of writers including historical fiction author Conn Iggulden, historian David Starkey, TV star Nick Hewer, BBC journalist John Simpson, former Home Secretary Alan Johnson, wine writer Oz Clarke and wife of the late Professor Stephen Hawking, Dr Jane Hawking, whose book inspired the Oscar-winning film, The Theory of Everything, talking about her new novel, Cry to Dream Again.

The Ted Hughes Festival, October 19-21, various locations in Mytholmroyd and Hebden Bridge. Marking the 20th anniversary of the death of the late poet laureate, a variety of talks, tours and guided walks to celebrate his life, including a chance to hear poet Simon Armitage and daughter of Ted, Frieda Hughes, read a selection of poems. www.theelmettrust.org
