Luxury lingerie retailer Rigby & Peller has chosen Harrogate for its first store in the North – and Gorgeous Yorkshire attended the launch party earlier this week to take a peek, joining the merry throng of fashionistas, politicians, business people, personalities and lingerie lovers who travelled from the four corners of Yorkshire to inspect the glorious underpinnings.
We had a lovely chat with June Kenton, above, who has been the face of Rigby & Peller ever since she and her husband, Harold, bought the company in 1982 (it was established in London 75 years ago by Mrs Rigby and – you guessed it – Mrs Peller). June is Corsetiere to the Queen and she used to fit the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret too. She is full of tips about bras and says that Rigby & Peller staff undergo a three-month training and don’t use tape measures. Instead, they take you into a cubicle, look at you, and then go straight to a drawer and select bras for you to start trying until you get the right fit.
June has had breast cancer (now fully recovered) and stresses that women who have had a mastectomy must make sure they have a proper fitting before getting their prosthesis.
Samantha Russell, above, is the store manager and she says she loves pretty much all the bras – and they are all so gorgeous, we don’t blame her. The changing rooms are amazingly cute and the whole ambience is that of a classy boudoir. And on the launch night, Weetons of Harrogate provided all the delicious canapes and liquid refreshments, adding rather beautifully to the air of elegance and luxury … with just the proper dash of decadence.
Rigby & Peller stocks lots of lovely brands, including Aubade, Marie Jo, Miraclesuit and Prima Donna. Prices for most bras are between £60-90 – and when you consider that they can make you and your clothes look better and might even sort out any neck or back problems you might have, that’s not such a bad price at all.
