We love handmade products, especially is they are from Yorkshire and especially when there is real skill involved. It’s why we are happy to wish Nigel Tyas Ironwork a happy 18th birthday.
Nigel and his team of fellow blacksmiths manufacture wrought iron lighting and curtain poles in their South Yorkshire forge. The products are sold direct to customers all over the world.
Nigel and his wife Elizabeth Stocker launched the business and in the early days it was just Nigel working alone with hammer, anvil and forge in his garage. Today, the couple employ a team of ten and run a workshop with a showroom attached, based in the village of Millhouse Green, near Sheffield.
Nigel says: “We are very proud of what we’ve achieved over the last 18 years and
we have worked hard to create a good strong business for the future.”
Nigel has a long career in metalworking behind him. He started training as a
blacksmithing apprentice at the age 16 with the National Coal Board at the Elsecar
workshops in the 1970s. He then worked for several industrial engineering
companies in South Yorkshire before being made redundant as the industry
contracted in the 1990s.
“I was made redundant, and engineering jobs were thin on the ground at that
time, so, I was really having to think about what I was going to do next. Alongside
that, I had always wanted to explore the more creative side of blacksmithing and put
my product design skills to use. It seemed the perfect moment to seize the opportunity and realise that ambition,” he says.
Elizabeth’s long career in IT was the perfect match to Nigel’s craftsmanship and she
took the lead on the online marketing and sales side of the business. She helped come up with the idea of an 18th birthday collection.
All of the work carries the prestigious ‘Made in Sheffield’ mark which recognises the
quality of manufactured products and celebrates the company’s close association
with the city’s metalworking heritage.
