A trip to my local heritage centre got me thinking about inspirational quotes from Yorkshire. Tucked away in a corner was this, below, from Alan Bennett. It was most apt as the centre is now under threat of change that could see it extinct within a few years. Fortunately, concerned and community minded people are fighting for this much-loved, historic building. Bennett’s wise words also brought the spirited battle to stop Sheffield council felling thousands of trees in the city.
Two other favourite quotes feature in my home and both are by Bronte sisters. The most recent addition is a vintage mirror with the words “No coward soul is mine“. This is the opening line of a poem by Emily Bronte, which begins “No coward soul is mine; No trembler in the world’s storm-troubled sphere…”
Etched glass artist Andy Poplar, aka Vinegar and Brown Paper, came up with the idea of etching it onto a mirror. He made one for me using a mirror I picked up in a charity shop years ago. I love it.
The second is this taken from Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. I bought the postcard ages ago from the wonderful Bronte Parsonage shop. It has a great selection of items featuring Bronte quotes, including another of my favourites from Jane Eyre “I would always rather be happy than dignified”. Amen to that!
