A little bird, aka artist Ailsa Read, told me about a little shop that she was sure I would love.
I filed it away in my overcrowded brain and forgot about it until I made a pitstop to buy a sandwich at the village shop in Ripley. The cheese must’ve done the trick because I recalled the name “Just Makers” and the directions.
It’s past the church and on the right in the Ripley Castle courtyard and lucky for me it was open. More of a gallery/shop packed to the rafters with treasures made by artists and makers, it is my idea of retail heaven. It’s also very warm and friendly thanks to the owner and staff who are understandly enthusiastic about what they sell – well, who wouldn’t be?
A quick chat revealed that Just Makers also has an outlet at Harlow Carr Gardens and they like to stock items made in Yorkshire, which, as we know, is brimful of artistic and design talent. It was a working day so it was a whistlestop visit, though I did have time to buy a couple of presents for my Christmas drawer and to snap a few of my favourite things with my phone.
