Helen James Flowers is a Harrogate landmark, sending out love and loveliness from its Station Parade shop and ensuring that the North Yorkshire town is an even more beautiful place than it already is.
The talents of the owner of Helen James Flowers, Helen Pannitt, are recognised far and wide, especially now that she has won this year’s RHS Chelsea Florist of the Year.
Florists from around the UK were invited to take part in heats last year, after which the highest scoring entrants competed in the final at the Chelsea Flower Show by creating a Royal floral crown. Helen won gold and the Florist of the Year title with her design.

It was an absolute treat and a privilege, therefore, to meet Helen at The Ivy Harrogate this month and to be taught by her how to make a floral crown as part of a special Sunday afternoon tea event in the lovely garden.

Jenni, right, and I are loving our crowns.

I went along with my friend Jenni. It was great fun and not too difficult, although Helen had prepped everything we needed so the blooms were all wired up and ready to go. We were rather pleased with our crowns. I wore mine home and then placed it on my dining table and put a Jo Malone candle in it. Which I wish I had taken a picture of because it looked lovely!

The garden at The Ivy Harrogate is looking splendid too, as Helen has transformed it for the summer to a theme inspired by Jo Malone’s Blossoms collection in pastel pinks and lemons. The Ivy has also created two special floral cocktails to tie in with Jo Malone’s Blossoms and we were able to sample as we made our crowns. The theme will stay in place until August 25, so there’s still time to go and see it and try one of those cocktails.
