You don’t have to be a total trainspotter – sorry, railway enthusiast – to love messing about on the railway. This weekend, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) is holding a Scottish Branch Line Gala weekend, from today, May 13, to Sunday, May 15, promising a great day out for families, with market stalls, pretty rail trips, station activities and Scottish food(!).
The resident NYMR fleet will be joined by Scottish Region diesel locomotives, with extra passenger shuttles and trains along the Esk Valley line to Battersby. This 24-mile line runs through beautiful scenery from Whitby to Battersby, stopping at Glaisdale, Danby and Castleton.
The NYMR stations will be decked out in style and there will be exhibitions of model railway displays by Scarborough and District Railway Modellers, and market stalls at Pickering Station. Scottish food and drinks (we’re assuming haggis and battered Mars Bars, but maybe not) will be available along the line.
There’s a competition so every child who presents a home-made shoebox train at Platform 2, Pickering Station, will receive a free children’s sticker activity book when travelling on a train. The NYMR Facebook page gives some how-to guide examples for making your own shoebox train. The overall young winner deemed to have made the best shoebox train will be rewarded with a £100 goody bag from the Station Shop including a family ticket for two adults and four children.

There are lots of lovely locomotives to see on the NYMR. Ah, the great days of steam.

The Motive Power Depot at Grosmont will feature lifting demonstrations using the 45 Ton steam crane on Saturday and the whole event is sure to offer a great opportunity for enthusiasts to tick a few sights off their lists.
If you can’t make it this weekend, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway is always worth a visit. It’s a lovely historic line, taking visitors on picturesque journeys along a 24-mile railway line aboard steam and heritage diesel trains, passing through wooded valleys and hillsides, stopping at pretty villages and seaside locations.
You can find out all about it in http://www.nymr.co.uk/ and for news, updates and competitions, North Yorkshire Moors Railway is also on Facebook www.facebook.com/northyorkshiremoorsrailway/
The overall shoebox train winner will be notified by May 20.
