This weekend sees the Great Seaside Vintage Fair take place at Whitby Pavilion, a fabulous event in a glorious setting.
Organised by Rose & Brown Vintage, the fair is now in its eight successive year and features more than 50 stalls of vintage fashion and homewares from the 1920s to the 1980s, offering everything under the vintage sun, from pretty frocks to vintage sunglasses, accessories and nostalgic including vintage books, old toys, small furniture, vintage suitcases, jewellery, plus antiques and collectables.
It is held in the Northern Lights Suite, perched above Whitby beach with enormous round windows looking out to sea. Whitby Pavilion, in case you haven’t been (and I hadn’t, until last month) is an atmospheric entertainment complex overlooking the sea with theatre, cinema, cafe and rooms and facilities for conferences, weddings and fairs. The original part, including the theatre, was built in 1878.
From the 1700s, Whitby’s West Cliff has been a genteel spot for sunbathing and beachside entertainments. There’s even a cliff lift, built in the 1930s, leading down to the beach and a long row of primary coloured beach huts, which are erected at the start of the summer and taken down at the end. Whitby residents say when that happens, they know the summer has ended for sure.
The Great Seaside Vintage Fair covers the spectrum of genuine vintage, says Caroline, who is also an artist and runs Rose & Brown Vintage with her husband, Julian (they also organise the ever-popular Saltaire Vintage Home & Fashion Fair and the Saltaire Record & Retro Fair). For this Whitby fair, there will be a specialist menswear stall, a vintage vinyl stall and a record player and radio stall, plus stalls specialising in French decorative vintage and antiques.
It takes place over this Saturday and Sunday so a great excuse to spend a day or two in Whitby. I’m going to write another piece very soon about my stay in Whitby, because we went on the Yellow Boat, stayed at the Shepherd’s Purse and ate at some lovely restaurants, but I’ll sign off for now – and recommend to you all the Great Seaside Vintage Fair.
