THIS WEEK: The Festival Of The Moon, until Sun, Sep 8, Wakefield Market Hall, Union Street, Wakefield. A celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing by Apollo 11 rocket in 1969. The centre-piece is an artwork Museum Of The Moon by artist Luke Jerram, seven metres in diameter with every centimetre representing 5km of the moon’s surface. https://www.
ON NOW: The Flourish of Liberty, exhibition inspired by the work of 18th century experimental novelist Laurence Sterne, who wrote The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman, which first appeared in 1759. Shandy Hall, Coxwold, until Aug 31, 11am-4.30pm, every day except Sat. The exhibition invites 102 artists to respond to the idea of ‘Liberty’, a theme taken from his novel, most of which was written at Coxwold in the North York Moors where Sterne was vicar for the eight years to his death in 1768. https://www.
COMING UP: Ilkley Literature Festival, Oct 4-20. actors, food writers, journalists and poets descend on Ilkley in West Yorkshire this October for a 17-day celebration of literature, the leading event of its kind in the North and the second oldest in the country. Poet Laureate Simon Armitage will open the festival, and other visitors include actor David Suchet presenting his autobiography Behind The Lens: My Life which is out in October; poet Lemn Sissay reading from his new memoir My Name is Why; and The Great British Bake Off presenter Prue Leith talking to Guardian food writer Felicity Cloake.TV presenter Clare Balding will read the latest in her popular series of pony stories as part of the Children’s Festival.
