THIS WEEK: Swaledale Festival, until June 8, various locations. This year’s event – which covers music, arts and walking – features violinist Tasmin Little, baritone Roderick Williams, the Armonico Consort performing Purcell’s Dido & Aeneas, Kathryn Tickell’s new supergroup The Darkening, the Villiers String Quartet, the Esbjerg Ensemble from Denmark and young musicians Clouds Harp Quartet. There are also guitarists including Paco Peña, Antonio Forcione, Craig Ogden and Manus Noble, and a performance by BBC Young Musician of the Year – pianist Lauren Zhang. THIS WEEK: Vintage @ LS28 (Leeds), Sat, June 1 and Sun, June 2, 10:30am-4pm, The Old Woollen, Sunny Bank Mills, Farsley, Leeds. A one-off vintage fair, within a disused industrial space at Sunny Bank Mills, complete with DJ’s playing soul, funk, indie and more on vinyl. Twenty-five stalls of original vintage, menswear, jewellery, records, books and toys. Incorporating a vintage fashion workshop and clothing alterations area. THIS WEEK: Brighouse 1940s Weekend, Sat, June 1, 10am-5pm, and Sun, June 2, 10am-4pm. Weekend of family fun as the town centre hosts of 1940s events and displays, ranging from from Spitfires to vintage vehicles, from home cooking to 1940s dress and make-up. http://
THIS WEEK: Views of Harrogate, until June 1, Mercer Art Gallery, Swan Road, Harrogate. Portraits of the spa town, from iconic Harrogate landscapes and scenes, such as Doris Zinkeisen’s contemporary society portrait of the Valley Gardens in its early 20th century heyday, to rare collectibles like The Beatles at the Royal Hall poster and rare Eurovision Song Contest programme. ON NOW: Ruskin, Turner & the Storm Cloud: Watercolours and Drawings, York Art Gallery, until June 23. Celebrating John Ruskin’s 200th birthday, this exhibition looks at the critical relationship he had with the landscapes of JMW Turner, exploring our relationship with the environment through the watercolours and drawings of two of the most celebrated artists of the 19th century in this major new exhibition. It brings together works from York Art Gallery and Abbot Hall Art Gallery, Kendal, with loans from national and regional collections and new commissions by contemporary artists. https://www.
ON NOW: Fabulous antique and vintage wedding dresses from the Harrogate Collection, Royal Pump Room Museum, Crown Place, Harrogate. Spanning almost two centuries, the exhibition includes more than 35 dresses showing how wedding fashion has developed and changed from the Victorian era onwards and also revealing some real life stories behind the dresses. Annual spring exhibition of two artists and designers devoted to the use of colour, Victoria Bellas Carter and Suzanne Tweddle. COMING UP: Weeton Show, Sun, July 28. Gates open 8am. Entry: adults £8, concessions £4. Village show south of Harrogate with a wide variety of events including Punch and Judy, brass bands, ferret racing, riders in the show jumping arena, carriage driving, hounds and beagles and shows throughout the day on the main event field. Also local food, trade and craft stalls, as well as the produce tent, where you can claim a rosette in a bake-off challenge, or local art, craft, horticulture exhibits or children’s classes.
