Thought Bubble Convention, Harrogate

THIS WEEK: Thought Bubble Convention, Nov 9-10, Harrogate Convention Centre. The biggest comic art convention in the UK finds a new home in Harrogate after 13 years in Leeds, with big names already confirmed to appear including Judge Dredd co-creator John Wagner, Watchmen artist Dave Gibbons, Spike Trotman, and Rosemary Valero-O’Connell. The accompanying Thought Bubble Festival, from Nov 4-10, will also feature exhibitions of comic art in smaller venues around Harrogate and throughout the region. https://www.thoughtbubblefestival.com

Wharfedale Beer and Music Festival, Fri, Nov 8 and Sat, Nov 9, Grassington Town Hall. Featuring more than 50 real ales from more than 23 northern breweries. There is also live music and Friday and Saturday nights and on Saturday afternoon. There are festival buses to Ilkley & Skipton. www.wharfedalebeerfestival.com

Harrogate Christmas Market, Thurs, Nov 14 to Sun, Nov 17, Thurs-Fri 10am-8pm, Sat 9.30am to 8pm, Sun 9.30am to 5.30pm. Held on The Stray in the Montpellier Quarter of Harrogate town centre, this four-day festive market is filled with high quality Yorkshire and Harrogate products, featuring nearly 200 stalls. There is also a craft and gift marquee and a food and drink marquee as well as funfair rides and musical entertainment. Harrogate’s Christmas lights will be officially switched on at a celebration outside the Victoria Shopping Centre on Thursday, Nov 14 from 4pm to 6pm. https://www.harrogatechristmasmarket.org

ON NOW: Alan Davie & David Hockney: Early Works, The Hepworth Wakefield, until Jan 19. Alan Davie, who had his first solo exhibition at Wakefield Art Gallery in 1958, was a major influence on the more celebrated Hockney, then a student at Bradford College of Art. ON NOW: Mosaic exhibition, Otley Courthouse, until Sat, Nov 9, Mon-Sat, 10am-4pm. Works by 26 people from Mosaic Mania in Otley as well as by its founder and tutor Frances Taylor. https://otleycourthouse.org.uk

ON NOW: Dolls’ House Exhibition, Newby Hall & Gardens, near Ripon. Seventy houses of all shapes, sizes, styles and ages in one of the world’s most important private collections. www.newbyhall.com

COMING UP: Artfest Holmfirth, Nov 16-17, Holmfirth Civic Hall. Showcase for art and craft from all disciplines: ceramics, print, jewellery, glass, sculpture, textiles, painting, mixed media and photography, with an emphasis is on original, handmade work. https://artfestholmfirth.com

COMING UP: The Christmas Fair, Ripley Castle, near Harrogate, Thurs, Nov 21 to Sun, Nov 24: Thurs and Fri, 9.30am-5pm,  Sat, 9.30am-5.30pm, Sun, 9.30am-4pm. Indoor festive fair in heated marquee featuring 155 companies. Also food hall, champagne bar and two restaurants.  The Christmas Experience, Lotherton Hall, Aberford, Leeds, Nov 22-Jan 5. Christmas magic and excitement complete with a Twelve Days of Christmas Walk around the estate, a fairy hideaway in the rock garden. and elves helping in their workshop. https://thechristmasexperience.co.uk
