Fast x Slow Fashion: Shopping for clothes in Leeds, 1720-2020

 Fast x Slow Fashion: Shopping for clothes in Leeds, 1720-2020, exhibition charting 300 years which saw Leeds transformed from a textile trailblazer to one of the nation’s top shopping destinations, featuring a collection of clothes, accessories and historic photos. ON NOW: 2020 Dark Skies Festival,  until March 1, held jointly by the North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales National Parks. BBC Sky at Night presenter Professor Chris Lintott will talk about his new book The Crowd and the Cosmos – Adventures in the Zooniverse on Feb 21 at Helmsley Arts Centre. The 17-day annual festival showcases the pristine night skies of both national parks and the neighbouring areas. Other events include virtual reality space safaris, stargazing sleepovers astrophotography, canoeing, running, cycling, walking, caving, night zip wire and nocturnal wildlife spotting evenings. www.darkskiesnationalparks.org.uk

 Lines of Beauty: Master Drawings from Chatsworth, Millennium Gallery, Sheffield,  until May 25. ON NOW: Northern Exposure, until April 19, Mercer Art Gallery, Harrogate. Following in the footsteps of JMW Turner’s eight-week sketching tour of the North of England in 1797, when he was 22. He visited many sites in Yorkshire, County Durham and Northumberland before going west to Cumbria and the Lake District, as he was transforming himself into one of the finest British landscape painters. Contemporary landscape artists Ed Kluz, Emerson Mayes, Debbie Loan, Katherine Holmes and Anna Lilleengen also present their own responses to Turner’s views and the Yorkshire landscape. https://www.turnernorthernexposure.co.uk/harrogate

ON NOW: Saad Qureshi: Something About Paradise,  Yorkshire Sculpture Park, until March 20. Artist Saad Qureshi explores what paradise means to different people in an exhibition presented in the nave of YSP’s 18th century chapel. https://ysp.org.uk/exhibitions/saadqureshi

NEXT WEEK: Potato Day, Feb 29, Mytholmroyd Community Centre. A celebration of our favourite tuber by Calder Valley Organic Gardeners, featuring 40 varieties of potato (organic and non-organic), children’s activities, stalls, plus food and drink.
