White rabbits and eggs for Easter

March 26, 2015 | 1 Comment

It’s almost Easter, which brings a great excuse to buy chocolate and cake and to take a break from studies and work, if possible.

Here are a few shopping and days out ideas.

Ok, it’s any excuse but Easter is a wonderful time to treat yourself to some of Betty’s finest.  My personal favourite is the apostle simnel fruit cake. The one pictured here is £26, though you can also buy a smaller one in a tin for £15 and slices for £7, www.bettys.co.uk

I love dark chocolate and, of course,  I love Yorkshire … so this is the egg for me.  It is pretty, luxurious and is handmade from Swiss Grand Cru dark chocolate with a white sugar paste rose. The Yorkshire rose egg was “hatched” at Betty’s and costs £27.50.

If you’re looking for an alternative to a chocolate egg, how about this for a bit of fun? It’s a choccy egg sandwich from Hotel Chocolat, £10. There are branches in Leeds, Harrogate, York and Meadowhall in Sheffield. Or you can buy online, www.hotelchocolat.com

Or how about this for a calorie-free alternative? It’s a bunny tea towel, £7.50, from Marks and Spencer. Sooo cute!

It’s the 150th anniversary of Alice in Wonderland and in celebration of Lewis Carroll’s classic tale there is
a White Rabbit Art Trail around Ripon during the Easter holidays.

Lewis, aka Charles Dodgson, grew up nearby and spent time in Ripon as his father was a Canon of the cathedral. It is said that the little city also provided inspiration for his most famous book.

The trail is the brainchild of Gaynor Gray of Gray Finch, a fabulous and quirky gift emporium on Kirkgate in Ripon.

Gray Finch stocks several Alice inspired goods among its weird and wonderful collections. In fact, the phrase “curiouser and curiouser” is most appropriate.

Gaynor asked 27 local artists and makers to produce white rabbits for the trail and they can be found in  shops and galleries, cafes and public buildings. The trail ends at Ripon Cathedral. Route maps are available from Gray Finch, Ripon Library and the Tourist Information centre.

The trail begins on Saturday 28th March, and runs throughout the Easter holidays ending on Sunday, April 12.

    Hi Gorgeous Yorkshire
I just wanted to say, thank you so much for the mention on your website. The Ripon Rabbit Trail is proving so popular, everyone is saying how much they have enjoyed it.
Thank you also for the fantastic review of the shop, I am hoping to make all of the “Alice in Wonderland “characters for Gray Finch, this year, so visitors can experience a little Lewis Carroll.
    Thanks again
    Gaynor
